Coach González (Coach “Gonz” for short) has been involved in volleyball as a player since the age of 3 and as a coach since 2015. She played in elementary, middle and high school. During her time at Briar Woods High School she led her team to be the 2016 VHSL 5A State Championship Runner up. While in college, Coach González played at the NCAA Division III level for The Catholic University of America as a Setter. During her time there she led her team in many tournament wins, helped her team place 3rd in the Landmark Conference in 2018, was named Landmark Athlete of the Week in 2018 and 2021 and graduated with a total of 2,603 assists completed in three seasons. In 2021 she graduated from CUA receiving her Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Psychology. Maria continued playing while getting her Doctor of Physical Therapy at Duke University on their club team. She helped them qualify for Nationals 2 years in a row.
Coach González has been coaching elementary, middle and high school age boys and girls since 2015. During her 2020 club season, she was able to take her U18 team along with Coach Jose González to win the AAU National Championship. She previously coached for Loudoun Elite during the 2022-2023 season. Besides her experience coaching volleyball, Coach González has experience in Strength and Conditioning. During the Summer of 2022, she was a Strength and Conditioning intern at Georgia Institute of Technology. She worked directly with their Men’s and Women’s Basketball team, Men’s and Women’s Tennis team and Women’s Volleyball team who all compete at the NCAA Division I level. She also has side line experience working with the Duke Football team as support staff for Sports Medicine.
Coach González is currently in her last year of Physical Therapy school at Duke University. She is completing her last clinical rotation that is focused on developmental pediatrics. Her previous two rotations focused on post-operative, return to sport, and general orthopedic patients from ages 7-90. She will graduate in May 2026 and hope to focus on treating athletes from from elementary to college level.
